January 2011 - What is it all about?

Hi team!

Hope everyone is having a great year so far.

We are making some changes to our network that have been long needed. What ideas do you have to make Career Connect better this year?

We still want to engage each other in person as members of a trusted network. That will not change. We also still leverage our shared experience, strengths, and hope to gain ROI from every network lead for a new job or a new client.

Yes it has been a long recession, and we have now all learned a few lessons. Please feel to share with us here and on our Linked In companion pages under the group pages.

Career Connect Singapore
Career Connect Thailand
Career Connect Philippines
Coffee Success Groups (meet up groups by invitation only)

This month I am featuring the US Department of Commerce website. Have a look for information on jobs and business outlooks in the USA and globally.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

RP

At our weekly meetings I always stress calling over email, voicemail and SMS. Call and ask for the meeting, and do not ask for what you want over the phone. You need to use all of you mind, body and spirit to get what you want, when you want it in business. That applies to job seekers and those who are selling to customers.

One Year Anniversary of Career Connect Singapore!

Sorry not to post here since October. I have been wonderfully busy consulting as well as doing the more face to face bits of networking in Singapore, Bangkok, Indonesia and Manila!

Our group has grown dynamically in 2009 from humble beginnings in a Starbucks last December with 3 people! We now have 20 members a week networking in Singapore and another 10 members meeting each week in Bangkok thanks to the efforts of Robin Eyre! We have over 500 members on the Career Connect Linkedin Group pages (Career Connect Singapore and Career Connect Thailand).

My vision for this group has come true! We have helped people connect in person and online in a trusted network that shares both job leads and client leads! We are a group that has measurable ROI! The reason is that as members put in leads, the more leads out of the group.

We are currently writing the 2010 Recruitment Guide for Singapore (with a chapter on Bangkok). Look for this book in mid-January in bookstores and for purchase online!

If you are one of our members who found work in 2009, do not forget to become a sustaining member of Career Connect! Do not let your job search network dry up, it is now your client search network!

Regards,

Rick Price

Networking when Current Events are talked about

Everyone should be ready to discuss current events when networking. You should be able to show your knowledge and understanding of how those events impact the business sector you work in.

One caveat is to know that each person has their own opinion. You should strive to keep your talking points to the facts about a current event and your own business sector. That would be helped by accessing objective media. This is more difficult these days, but can still be done. One media outlet to try is The Christian Science Monitor which has a reputation for fairness in reporting. There are also some NGO and government websites that have a reputation for fairness, but be careful to recognize overt and subtle attempts at politicizing a current event rather than reporting based on facts.

In my grandfather's time, he would avoid all discussion of politics, religion and sex to maintain his reputation as a gentlemen. He also listened to people more than he spoke, and was able to gain a better world view. I take his practice as just one way to improve myself as a business networker.

How would you handle current events in discussion?
